Goal: Reduce hiking injuries, inner canyon rescues, and deaths.
Problem: Many seasonal hires and park visitors are unaware of the risks of hiking in the inner canyon from May- October. This lack of knowledge led to numerous injuries and deaths of park visitors and the exhaustion of employees working on the Inner Canyon rescue team.
Solution: Create an e-learning course that trains seasonal employees on the ten strategies to Hike Smart! This e-learning course will transform seasonal hires into knowledgeable resources who can assist park visitors in exploring the Grand Canyon independently and safely.
Results: Using prevention through education strategy, providing park visitors with face-to-face encounters with educated employees, and strategically placed signage, 30,000 park guests a year have been convinced to change their hiking plans to more realistic and sensible goals, reducing inner canyon rescues, injury, and death.

To begin this project, I analyzed the data of our summer employees. I immediately recognized that summer hires were a diverse group of individuals from around the globe whose native language was not English. This let me know I would be designing a training to implement various bilingual education strategies that would eliminate language barriers, reduce information overload, educate, and engage.
After creating a high-level outline, I transitioned to drafting a written storyboard. Keeping the training succinct with visual cues to help with understanding was imperative to the success of the training. To effectively target all three objectives, I told my story of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I wove together a story/script of the location's history, ten essentials to accomplish a hike successfully, and an array of visual examples to reduce confusion among the new employees.
Finally, I decided to develop the training in Camtasia and PowerPoint. I sourced, created, and edited all the course graphics, using stock photos available in PowerPoint, Grand Canyon Public Library, NPS, and colleagues.
